How to Install a Sink Top for Your Bath Vanity

Posted under bathroom, home remodeling

I was surfing YouTube earlier today and I found this little video on how to install a vessel sink countertop to a bathroom vanity. It’s not at all a complicated procedure, but one that any prospective bathroom remodeler should know how to do.

First, you will need a tube of acrylic caulk and an appropriate caulking gun. You can find caulk in any hardware store, in a range of strengths.

Next, it’s time to caulk your vanity sink top. Apply a consistent string of caulk around the edges of the bathroom vanity frame, but don’t overdo it: you don’t want the caulk to come out the sides, because it will just harden into an ugly mess. If any caulk does squeeze out from under the countertop, immediately wipe it up to prevent an eyesore.

Then, it’s time to install the sink top… or, rather, drop it in. If you line up the vessel sink vanity top correctly and set it down gently it should just fall into place. Again, don’t drop it too hard, as it is a.) heavy and b.) liable to splatter caulk all over your bathroom.

Remember that your vanity is made of wood or some kind of wood composite, and won’t hold up to the weight of a stone countertop if you’re not gentle.

Wait for everything to dry, and then caulk around the edges and against the wall so no moisture can get in. This will preserve the integrity of the bath vanity, and keep it looking fresh and clean for years. Seriously, nothing ruins a vanity quite like excessive humidity and moisture.

He doesn’t mention this in the video, but it is a good idea to replace your caulk every few years as it tends to lose its potency after a while.

The man in the video also talks about GFI electrical outlets, which are great for bathrooms because they have a kill switch located on the face of the outlet. This is an effective way to avoid shock related injuries, which is especially important in a moist bathroom. You can install one directly above your bathroom vanity. Certainly worth thinking about!
